Scorpions are arthropods having eight legs, two pedipalps, and a tail with a venom-injecting barb. Their color will vary from many
different shades of yellow, red, gray, tan, brown and black. The female scorpion produces an average of 32 living young which
climb onto her back and remain there for 5 to 15 days. They will grow to maturity in about 3 to 4 years.
Scorpions are dry land animals and are not usually found around swampy or watery areas.
Scorpions are nocturnal and do most of their feeding in the night hours. They prey on insects, other arthropods and in some cases
small vertebrates. All scorpions are venomous and use their venom in self-defence or to paralyze and kill their pray.
Each scorpion has its’ own unique venom, thus they all have different toxicities. This is why the Arizona Bark Scorpion is lethal
and the Striped Bark Scorpion isn’t. Even new born scorpions have venom so do not underestimate their size. Scorpions
generally range from 1 inch to 4 inches in length, however some species are known to get even larger. If you believe you may

Striped Bark Scorpion
Scorpions are found all across the world with over 2,000 different species in
existence. Many of those species are found right here in Texas. Of the many
types of scorpions found in Texas, none is more widespread and common to our
area than the Striped Bark Scorpion. It is considered a major pest because of its
ability to get inside homes where it will hide in secure dark areas such as closets,
under clothes or inside shoes.
The Striped Bark Scorpion is an extremely small scorpion compared to many of
the species in the world. An adult normally only reaches about 1 inch in size and
rarely up to 1-1/2 inches. They are variable in color and pattern, generally a light
yellow to orange or darker yellow to reddish color. They have longitudinal stripes
on their back and a dark dark triangular mark on their head.
This small species has a powerful sting that often produces intense pain which
can last for several hours. Other than this pain and a red welt that shortly
disappears, there are rarely any other medical complications. A few people may
have an allergic reaction to the venom with more severe symptoms, and children
can also be more at risk.
